The dream begins . . .
Emma Curran first began her music fairytale after making a banner at a Snow Patrol concert in Madison Square Gardens Theatre in New York. This lead to her singing with the chart-toppers onstage and thereafter back home in Glasgow’s King Tuts. She was then signed by music impresario John McGlaughlin along with the prodigal talent of Teenage Fanclub’s Francis MacDonald. The non stop express that Emma has been on could be surprising for some but for those that know her talent it is almost expected. She first began singing in her Primary school choir and had her first experience of performing in Glasgow’s Kings Theatre as a choir member in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicoloured Dreamcoat. When asked about performing onstage for the first time she says it set the foundations for what would become a lifelong passion – “I remember sitting on the stage in the King’s and feeling more excited than nervous…when the curtain went up I remember just feeling so happy and settled on the stage, then that was it…I developed an adoration for singing, however it was more of a personal activity I really enjoyed rather than something I considered as taking onboard for a career”.
When Emma first sang with Snow Patrol, she was in her second year of university studying to obtain a degree in Adult nursing – “School then university is all I’ve ever known. Then suddenly I was given the fantastic opportunity to record an album. I experienced a whole different side to life and really enjoyed seeing what was on the other side. The whole recording process has been challenging, working with a band and juggling university with gigging have also presented some stressful times however I wouldn’t change a thing. I’m learning as a performer all the time and I’m now excited for people to hear the album and I’m totally committed to working hard…I hope people will enjoy what they hear.” Emma has now recorded several songs with exceptional and well recognised talent from the aforementioned Francis MacDonald, producer extraordinaire and Echo and the Bunnymen member Gordon Goudie, Stevie Jackson from the defining Belle & Sebastian and Eugene Kelly from indie-pop sensation “The Vaselines”. Eugene has penned the song 'I Want You Back' for Emma's long awaited album. “When I first heard that Eugene Kelly had written a song for me I was very appreciative to have such a talent to write for my album – I was aware that Gary Lightbody is a fan of his. Then my guitarist told me Nirvana covered some Vaseline’s songs…then I thought wow…this is really cool. I have to say though I’m grateful to everyone who has worked with me and feel very fortunate to have amazing talents onboard.” Not one to shy away from a challenge Emma has written two songs for the album with her lead guitarist Martin Mochan – ‘Here’s Where I Get Off’ and ‘Will You Wait For Me?’ When discussing her inspiration behind these songs she states it was just what was on her mind that particular day – “When I wrote those songs it was very quick…obviously Martin composed the melodies and Elaine my keyboard player also worked on ‘Will You Wait For Me?’ but I had a strong opinion for what kind of sound I was going for…I wanted ‘Here’s Where I Get Off’ to be almost like a lullaby and as for the lyrics they are based on personal experiences. I just put pen to paper then before I knew it the songs got Francis and John’s approval and I was in the studio recording them.”
Now Emma is gearing herself up for a big year. So what can we expect of this Scottish songstress in 2010? “Lots of gigs and my album is due for release in March…I’ll be a busy girl but that’s the way I like it. I look at my banner and think of it as a golden ticket. Not to the music industry but to an area of my life that would never have been unlocked without it – I’m so proud of the album and it reflects my
